CHAPTER FOUR

STANDING UP FOR YOURSELF

Do you avoid confrontation? Do you worry that you’re too nice at work? Does this make people take advantage of you? From time to time, everyone says or does things to please someone else. Then you might wonder, “Why didn’t I say no?”, “Why didn’t I stand up for myself?”, or “Why didn’t I say what I really think?”

Having a job means sometimes you have to do things you might not be in the mood for. Don’t forget that you are getting paid to do a task. You should also try to respect your manager or boss. Attempt to comply with his or her rules and wishes. But remember, you were probably hired thanks to your personality, skills, and experience. And no matter what kind of job you have, it is important that you be allowed to communicate your ideas and display your talents. The skill of expressing yourself in a clear, honest, and positive way is known as being assertive.
